Vintage Iroquois Raised Beadwork Buckskin Waistcoat - XS
A stunning and collectable piece of Iroquois raised beadwork.
With a rich history, dating back to the 17th century, the Iroquois people's beadwork is instantly recognisable, with its raised and twisted structure and its depiction of obvious figurative elements, including, as on this example, birds and flowers, it stands out amongst the many styles of First Nations beadwork.
This piece dates back to the first half of the twentieth century, made in buckskin, it is lined in rose pink cotton with zig-zag edging, scalloped at the back hem, and covered in twisting vines bearing flowers and birds.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire a museum quality piece.
Although some marks to the buckskin have been sustained, the overall condition is good and the leather remains soft throughout. Excluding a few loose threads on the lowest flower at the back the beadwork is all secure and in place.
